Q: Talk a little bit about your role and professional background.
A: I am a source water protection hydrologist with the Minnesota Department of Health. I help public water suppliers determine the groundwater capture zones of their wells, the vulnerability of the aquifers used, and assist in determining strategies to manage aquifer vulnerabilities. In previous roles, I helped develop County Groundwater Atlases (including authoring those for Hubbard and Wadena Counties) and managed a North Dakota ambient groundwater monitoring program for agricultural chemicals.
Q: What made you interested in groundwater?
A: I grew up on a central Minnesota dairy farm. On the farm, I developed an interest in observing and learning about the relationship between water and the land.
Q: What inspired you to join the board?
A: While an undergraduate in college at St. Cloud State University, I received the Gil Gabanski student scholarship. Now that I’m into my professional career, I wanted to give back to the organization after it helped fund some of my college education.
Q: Favorite place in Minnesota?
A: The St. Louis River valley around Jay Cooke State Park.
Q: Fun fact about yourself?
A: My wife and I became first-time parents of our daughter in April this year.
Q: Interests/favorite hobbies outside of groundwater?
A: I’ve been learning to play cello over the past year. I’m also an avid reader and enjoy spending time outdoors hiking and biking.
