Megan Wedal Joins MPCA

I joined the MPCA staff in July 2023 as a groundwater hydrologist. My primary focus is maintaining the MPCA’s Ambient Groundwater Network, which is composed mainly of monitoring wells installed in shallow sand and gravel aquifers across the state. The network monitors background conditions of Minnesota’s shallow groundwater and serves as an “early warning” system for contaminants of emerging concern and potential threats to aquifers. In collaboration with MNDNR’s Sentinel Lakes Program, I also manage a smaller network of wells focused on groundwater/surface water interactions.

I attended the University of Minnesota, where I studied Earth Sciences with emphases on geology and hydrogeology. Before coming to the MPCA, I worked as a geologist at a small environmental consulting firm specializing in remediation and derailment emergency response.
