Minnesota DNR releases Isanti County groundwater atlas

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has published “The Groundwater Atlas of Isanti County.” It covers groundwater flow, groundwater chemistry and the pollution sensitivity of aquifers, expanding on the geologic atlas previously produced by the Minnesota Geological Survey.

Groundwater atlases help identify viable drinking water sources, support sustainability, guide well and septic system construction decisions, inform wellhead protection efforts for public water supplies, highlight regional recharge and groundwater movement, and assess pollution sensitivity and possible contaminant migration.

The atlas is available:

  • Online: The report (files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/groundwater_section/
mapping/cga/c44_isanti/isan-report.pdf) is provided in PDF format. Oversized PDFs of the water chemistry (files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/groundwater_section/
mapping/cga/c44_isanti/isan-plate7.pdf) and hydrogeologic cross section (files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/groundwater_section/
mapping/cga/c44_isanti/isan-plate8.pdf) maps are also available. Geographic information system (GIS) files (files.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/groundwater_section/
mapping/cga/c44_isanti/c44b_met.html), including the associated metadata and an ArcMap file, can be downloaded for use.
  • In print: Copies can be purchased online (dnr.oceangrafix.com/shop/minnesota/p/
    isanti-c44-groundwater-atlas) from OceanGrafix (1-877-562-4278).

Later this year, Isanti County and the DNR will hold a public workshop to share more detailed findings, answer questions and provide hands-on instruction on how to use atlas content.

For more information, visit the County Groundwater Atlas program webpage (mndnr.gov/waters/groundwater_section/mapping/index.html). A status map (mndnr.gov/waters/groundwater_section/mapping/county-geo-atlas.html) of published and planned county atlases is also available.

Partial funding for the groundwater atlas project is provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Clean Water Fund.
